Directed by Tom Sys, a 23-year-old Belgian filmmaker, A Queen¡¯s Runway is a story about ambition, identity, and everything that happens when the cameras aren¡¯t rolling. Over three and a half months, the documentary follows several contestants as they prepare to compete for the prestigious Miss Universe Philippines title.?
Whether it's adjusting gowns, rehearsing answers, or facing criticism and self-doubt, each contestant has a unique story that goes far beyond makeup and stage lights. Tom Sys, known for films like Beyond The Curtain and And That¡¯s How I Met My Wife, created this documentary through his studio Movart, which he co-founded with Erik Sopracasa.
For Tom, this film is a dream turned into reality. Speaking about his journey, he shared in a media statement, ¡°As a young, international filmmaker navigating Hollywood, this milestone represents not just a personal achievement but also a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of storytelling on a budget¡±
Inspired by popular Netflix series like Drive to Survive and Break Point, Tom aimed to change how people view pageantry. ¡°It¡¯s more than glitz and glam. It¡¯s art, struggle, sacrifice, and heart,¡± he says. And that¡¯s exactly what A Queen¡¯s Runway sets out to prove. The documentary features several well-known contestants, including Chelsea Manalo, Shamcey Supsup-Lee and Christi McGarry.
For the unversed, A Queen¡¯s Runway will be available on Netflix for the next four years. For Filipino viewers, the docu will be streaming on a Pay-Per-View basis this month on iWantTFC. The premiere already took place in Manila in January.
