Since its premiere on Prime Video, Reema Kagti and Varun Grover's Superboys of Malegaon, has received the finest reviews. For those who are asking if this is based on a true story or not, the answer is yes, as they also show the real-life people that served as inspiration for the film at the end. The story of a group of men who want to make movies in a tiny town like Malegaon serves as the basis for Superboys of Malegaon. The movie also gives credit to the 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon directed by Faiza Ahmad Khan. Today, let's take a look at the real story that inspired the movie and what the makers had in mind.
The film, which is set in the 1990s, is based on the true story of Shaikh Nasir, whose life rights Kagti and her producing partner, renowned filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, purchased after seeing him in the 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon. The movie, which is set in Malegaon, a west Indian city roughly five hours' drive from Mumbai, centers on a group of friends who start their own little film business in spite of having little money.?
As shown in the film, they did anything and everything to arrange for equipment to make the movie which was Malegaon¡¯s Sholay.
The craze in Malegaon originated when Sheikh Nasir began making incredibly low-budget parodies of well-known Bollywood films, Reema Kagti told The National. His films struck a profound chord with local audiences because he cast members of his own community and included their problems into the plots. Many films of a similar nature started to appear over time, and Nasir, possibly without realising it, created a whole alternative video film industry that is akin to a parallel cinematic universe.
Kagti stressed that these filmmakers had very little resources and were not affluent. But they used their imagination to the fullest, making the most of what they had. She referred to their approach as "jugaad," a distinctively Indian method of problem-solving in which amazing results are achieved by stretching limited resources.
At the end of Superboys of Malegaon, the filmmakers reveal what happened to the real individuals who inspired the story.
Shafique Shaikh sadly passed away from lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 30. Farogh Jaferi died in 2020 at 45. Irfan Ilyas now runs a business and continues acting in Malegaon films, while Aleem Tahir works as an author and Urdu teacher in Mumbai. Akram Khan has become a producer in Malegaon and also creates films for his YouTube channel.? Nasir, the heart of the movement, married Shabeena and has three children.
