The classic tale of Devdas, originally written by Bengali author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, has been told and retold multiple times over past 90 years. The two memorable versions are - Sanjay Leela Bhansali's and Anurag Kashyap's modern day take on the story.
In Kashyap's modern twist to Devdas, he uses music to establish the overall arcs of each character instead of focussing on one like Bhansali did. The film went on to become?Amit Trivedi's breakout film - from Emotional Atyachar to Pardesi, the songs of the films became a rage back then and continue to hit a chord. Did you know it was Abhay Deol's idea to make this film??
The man who started his journey with?Imtiaz Ali's romantic comedy Socha Na Tha and went on to feature in movies like?Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! among others met Kashyap at a party where he reportedly discussed this idea with him. This was long before he had made his Bollywood debut. So, when Kashyap decided to make this film, he cast Abhay Deol in it.?
Not only did Kashyap basked in the success of the film, but Abhay Deol also became a star too.?
The Gangs of Wasseypur filmmaker said this in an interview with HuffPost India. "It was painfully difficult to work with him. I don't really have great working memories with him. And haven't talked to him much since I finished shooting."
He called Deol confused. "He wanted to do artistic movies but also wanted the mainstream benefits. The benefits and luxuries of being a 'Deol'. He would stay in a five-star hotel while the entire crew stayed in Paharganj for a film that was made on a very tight budget. Also the reason a lot of his directors went away from him."
Kashyap said that Abhay didn't even turn up for promoting the movie. "He wasn't there to promote Dev D. He dissed the film and crew a lot. He was gone a long time. It was because of something he was grappling with emotionally and personally and never talked about. He also felt betrayed by me about which he has never spoken to me ever," Kashyap said and added that Deol is a brilliant actor whatsoever.?
After Dev D released, he would drink every day like a fool. "The Dev D role that I did, I wasn't out of that headspace. So, for one year, I did what Dev D did in the film. I have a little better than Dev. I wasn't in tattered clothes in the streets. I drank every day like a fool. I made some very good friends, so I remember some things. My whole life is a daze," he recently said.
He said this in an interview with Bollywood Hungama. "I've been taken advantage of, manipulated and gaslit by directors I worked with!" he had said.?
"(Kashyap) went in public, and told a lot of lies about me. One was that I demanded a [five-star] hotel room [during the shoot of Dev.D]. He had actually come up to me and said, 'Listen, you can't stay with us, you are a Deol. So, I want to put you up in a hotel room.' He literally told me that. What he told the press was that I demanded it."
He added, "So, there was clearly a lot going on at the time, which was not professional. I had my heart on my sleeve, and all that is great ¡ª but you get taken advantage of, and then you get reactive. So, he [Kashyap] was a good lesson for me. Then I just avoided him, because I don't need toxic people in my life. Life is too short, and there is so much more to explore. But he (Kashyap) is definitely a liar and a toxic person. And I would warn people [about] him."
"It is okay if that is how he feels. Everyone has his own version of the truth. Maybe he felt attacked about what I had spoken about him earlier. I have personally apologised to him for hurting his feelings," he told Mid-Day.
