After his fame in Darlings and Mirzapur, Vijay Varma has become quite the household name, especially after he played an amusing but complex character in Netflix's Lust Stories 2. Starring opposite his girlfriend Tamannaah Bhatia, who he met on the set of the film, Varma's on-screen as well as off-screen life has become quite appealing to his fans.?
However, like they say don't judge a book by its cover, Varma's antagonist characters do not reflect on his true self which is a shy, gentle personality. In an interview with ETimes, Varma spoke about his achievements and his upcoming projects.?
He said that he did not expect Lust Stories 2 to be "such a big deal" and he's really happy about it. Now, he is looking forward to his upcoming project 'Kalkoot' in which he is all set to play the role of a cop.?
"I couldn't plan this myself but I'm just glad that this year I had one release in 2022 which was 'Darlings' and this year I had 'Dahaad' and 'Lust Stories 2'. I didn't anticipate it to be such a big deal but it turned out to be a very big deal," he told ETimes.
Talking about Kaalkoot, he added, "I am really excited about 'Kaalkoot' because this is a story which is probably the most close to my heart. Yeh dil se passion project hai mera. It is something that I've been working on for like three years now. I took out time to do it because I felt like I have not read a script that moved so beautifully. The drama is so unreal."
"When I read the script I felt like this is such a unique new thought. So I'll tell you, this is a police sub-inspector called Ravi Shankar Tripathi. He's a young police officer maybe two or three months into the job. He's kept one foot at the door, he is resigning in the beginning only because he's not feeling equipped enough or suitable enough to do the job. And then what is the case he gets which gets him going. It's basically a self discovery or coming of age of a police officer and that was very fascinating for me. He's humanised a man whose job is being a police officer, that was very interesting, to see a police person in such a human way or somebody who doesn't even look like he can do something," he said.?
"He was willing to quit the job right at the beginning of the career and then the metamorphosis happened. When an acid is thrown on a woman, who is responsible for it? So, he plays a catalyst in finding out who's truly responsible. That study is what we've tried to show with the eyes of a person who seems unlikely to be doing this job," he added.
Talking about stepping out of the 'bad guy' category, Varma said, "Yes, the last few outings have been fairly scary for the audiences so I'm just happy to be giving some respite, to be giving them a little soothing balm, and show myself in a light way. It's something that they've never seen before so it's definitely a box-breaking role for me and so I am also equally excited to find out how people will react to this. There's a big section of the audience who wants to see me play the evil guy. They seem to be loving it and I have a lot of fans who enjoyed seeing me do that but now I'm eager to see what happens when I play somebody who is sensitive and empathetic, caring, kind and on the right side of the law."
When asked if he relates to the character he plays in Kaalkoot, he said,?"The other characters required a certain kind of dropping of inhibitions and really pushing myself into the wild, but here it's more home because I connect with this character in many ways. I've always been an idealist person, fairly na?ve?in my ways, innocent to the ways of the world and in difficult times trying to do the right thing. So, in those battles, I could find relatability with this guy although it is again a completely new character but I was hoping that I could tap onto the warmth that I have as a person, into this role."
He also said that the industry is kind to him and he is getting many offers.
"I'm getting roles that I never thought I would be getting and that has been happening since the last couple of years. I'm able to kind of pick and choose the ones I like, but there's a lot of respect that I feel, there's a lot of love," he said.?
Kaalkoot is scheduled to be released on JioCinema on 27 July 2023.
