Everyone knows a Lannister always pays his debts ¡ª but will Netmarble and Warner Bros. repay fans¡¯ early access patience?
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, the action-adventure RPG based on George R. R. Martin¡¯s iconic universe is set to fully launch on 21 May 2025, leaving early access behind. Available on all major mobile platforms, as well as PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Windows, the game is aiming to turn around its initial reception.?
First released in March 2025 through Steam Early Access, Kingsroad was met with a ¡®mixed¡¯ user rating. While some players praised its immersive storytelling and familiar Westeros setting, criticism largely centred on aggressive monetisation. The most upvoted Steam review at the time remarked: ¡®It¡¯s like a mobile game on steroids and kinda not in a good way.¡¯??
In response, Netmarble published an FAQ on Steam addressing concerns. The company emphasised that Kingsroad is ¡®fundamentally designed with a focus on single-player gameplay¡¯, and reassured players that significant testing had been done to ¡®minimise any feelings of imbalance or unfairness¡¯ between early access veterans and new players.
The team added: ¡®We encourage all players to focus on the inherent fun of progressing through the later stages and reaching the endgame content, rather than comparing progress with other characters.¡¯
Acknowledging past issues, Netmarble apologised for ¡®somewhat lacking¡¯ communication and patch rollout. Looking ahead, the developers have promised ¡®more frequent and transparent communication through regular AMA sessions and Developer Notes.¡¯?
Players can now pre-register on both the App Store and Google Play. A premium Founder¡¯s Pack ¡ª offering early access perks and exclusive in-game items ¡ª remains available for those eager to dive deeper into Westeros from day one.
Whether the full release can win over sceptics remains to be seen, but one thing¡¯s certain: winter is coming ¡ª again.
