Over six decades have passed since a woman travelled into space independently, without a man. Well, this is not the case anymore, as we are in the 21st century, and now six women, including pop popstar Katy Perry, author Lauren Sanchez, journalist and TV anchor Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, former rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, are due to launch in Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket today.
The launch of the rocket will be the latest flight of the New Shepard programme, named NS-31, which is focused on creating a lasting impact on the upcoming generations.
The campaign is aimed at inspiring others, with women forming the first all-female crew since Russian engineer Valentina Tereshkova's solo flight to space in 1963.
According to SkyNews, the trip is expected to only last about 11 minutes, with the reusable self-driving rocket taking off from Launch Site One in Texas at 8:30 am local time (2:30 pm BST).
The rocket will reach a maximum height of 100km above the Earth. The women will enter the space as the capsule crosses the Karman line, which is internationally recognised as the boundary of space. The crew will have nearly four minutes of weightlessness to float around and take in the views of Earth from the capsule's large windows.
Following this, the crew capsule will then descend back to Earth using three parachutes.
The mission is led by Mr Bezos's finance Sanchez, who told Elle Magazine that she chose her fellow crew members because each had "proven their ability to inspire others".
She said all the women will be able to spread the word on what they felt like during the space trip and also share their ideas of what the next generation of space explorers will look like.
According to the report, Katy Perry undertook the final preparations before she met up with an all-female crew in space. The singer managed to get in some last-minute astronaut lessons in Texas on Sunday.
It will be the first all-women mission in more than six decades. Just ahead of the mission, Perry also shared a snap of herself in which she is seen vowing to put "the ass" in astronaut in the coming hours.
On Sunday, when Perry shared the post about her space travel, fans quickly shared their reactions, and they wondered, What is she going to do in space?'
One wrote, "How long is she gonna be in space for?"
"Why would a non-astronaut go to space...?"
While another commented, "People would do anything to revive their careers"
