It can't be a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) vs Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash without drama and controversy. CSK were cruising to victory when Lungi Ngidi was brought back to bowl the 16th over and dismissed Ayush Mhatre, who missed his century by just 6 runs.
Dewald Brevis came to the crease to face the next ball ¡ª and that's when the controversy erupted. Some blamed the batter for not reviewing quickly enough, others pointed fingers at the umpire, while a section of fans began accusing RCB of cheating.
Brevis attempted to flick a high full-toss and set off for a run, but was immediately given out LBW by umpire Nitin Menon. The decision sparked instant controversy. Replays showed the ball was clearly sliding down leg and would have missed the stumps ¡ª in fact, it was missing even the fifth stump, according to HawkEye.
However, Brevis didn't signal for a review right away. Instead, he consulted his partner Ravindra Jadeja, costing him crucial seconds. Despite no review timer appearing on the screen, the umpire ruled that the review window had expired.
Jadeja was seen looking at the giant screen while discussing the decision with Brevis. To add to the drama, there was a direct hit at the bowler's end ¡ª but Brevis had safely made it in.
While Lungi Ngidi celebrated, Virat Kohli was quick to approach the umpire, followed by Tim David, who exchanged a few words with Jadeja. Ultimately, Menon stood by his decision, and Brevis was asked to walk.?
Final verdict: Brevis was out for a duck ¡ª a moment that has reignited debates over umpiring standards and DRS protocols.
Many on X (formerly known as Twitter) had different opinions. One said, "Dewald Brevis was thinking so much to review when CSK had 2 reviews left. Brain fade".
Another said, "Clear Not out...Dewald brevis".
One wrote, "Absolute brain fade from Dewald Brevis...there was no way that was out on first glance either. Abysmal umpiring".
Another wrote, "WTH was that umpire???? Dewald ko review kyun nai karne diya?".
One added, "Rohit Sharma vs Rajasthan took the DRS at 0 second and today Dewald Brevis was not allowed to take DRS as clock was not visible. Are the rules different for Mumbai Indians??".
Another stated, "Clock Not Shown Now Umpires Blaming The Batsman. RCB should Thank Nitin Menon & Third Umpire for this".
