Amid 'Bawaal' Over Not Releasing The Film In Theatres, Varun Dhawan Explains Why They Chose OTT

Bawaal, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, will soon be available on OTT. Because Nitesh Tiwari's film was produced on such a large scale, it was only logical for moviegoers to question why it was being released on an OTT platform.

When the trailer was released, a lot of people questioned why they decided to go for an OTT release. Some thought that it is probably because of the use of Word War II in their concept.

When questioned about the same, Varun told Bollywood Hungama that, given the state of the economy, it is impossible to produce a movie without an OTT partner.

He said, ¡°Theatres are not going anywhere. They are here to stay. The collective experience of watching a film and celebrating is still there and we love it. As actors, that¡¯s the biggest joy and high you get. But, in today¡¯s economic climate, you cannot make a film without an OTT partner. Because 70 percent of your capital to make a film is coming from¡­ (OTT) 70 percent. So you should ask any producer how important the OTT players are for them to make films today. They will tell you how important they are.¡±

Janhvi Kapoor added, ¡°We can¡¯t ignore that OTT platforms are a big part of the industry now.¡±

Varun Dhawan Reveals Janhvi Kapoor ¡®took It Personally¡¯ When He Did Not Speak to Her for a Month on Bawaal Set

In an interview with Gallata Plus, Varun said, ¡°Initially, at least for the first one month we went on set, I tried this thing where I said I won¡¯t communicate with her much. Because I felt we¡¯ll become friends like this (snaps). I said let me not, and let me be a little aloof, a little cold. I¡¯ll talk to everyone else but her, and purposely. I felt it might evoke something in her and something in me when we were doing scenes of that nature.¡±

He added, ¡°Sir (Nitesh Tiwari) was on this. And then eventually, I told her after 20 days. Then she realised it, otherwise she took it personally. See, I did it selfishly but I think it helped both of us at that time. Actually, in the film, how gradually the couple got to know each other, we also got to know each other gradually, which was interesting.¡± Reacting to Varun¡¯s comments, director Nitesh Tiwari said, ¡°I didn¡¯t really notice. I honestly don¡¯t mind which schools you guys are from, as long as I get my shot. I think I got that.¡±

Bawaal is a timeless love story produced by Sajid Nadiadwala's production company Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment in association with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari's Earthsky Pictures. It is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and stars Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor. On July 21, Prime Video India will debut the movie.
