Indian-American Filmmaker Mira Nair's Son Zohran Mamdani Wins New York State Assembly Seat
Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair's son Zohran Mamdani has won a seat in New York Assembly in the recent US elections 2020. With that, he has become first South Asian to win the seat.

Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair who is known for movies like The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay among others expressed her happiness on Twitter after her son won a seat in New York Assembly.

With the win, Indian-Ugandan Zohran Kwame Mamdani has become one of two candidates of Indian-origin elected to NY state office.
"It¡¯s official: we won. I'm going to Albany to fight to tax the rich, heal the sick, house the poor & build a socialist New York. But I can't do it alone. To win socialism, we'll need a mass movement of the multiracial working class as well. So let's build one," Mamdani tweeted.

Indian-American lawyer Jenifer Rajkumar was also elected to New York State Assembly, thereby becoming the first South Asian woman elected to New York state office.
