China backs Pakistan over Pahalgam terror attack, calls for ¡®fair probe¡¯ as India hits back with retaliation
Following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, China has strongly supported Pakistan¡¯s sovereignty, condemned terrorism, and called for a "swift and fair" investigation while urging India and Pakistan to avoid further escalation.
Days after the deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir¡¯s Pahalgam region, China has stepped in with strong statements backing Pakistan. Even while calling for peace and investigation, Beijing made it clear that it stands firmly with Islamabad on the issue of sovereignty and security. The incident, which killed mostly tourists, has once raised strong questions between India and Pakistan relations, with both countries exchanging sharp actions and words.
Support for Pakistan and call for calm
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on April 27 over the phone. According to China¡¯s state-run Xinhua news agency, Dar informed Wang about the situation following the terror attack in Kashmir.
Wang stressed that China is keeping a close watch on the developments and that the global fight against terrorism is a shared responsibility. Wang stated that China, being a trusted friend and strategic partner of Pakistan, fully understands Islamabad¡¯s security concerns and supports Pakistan in defending its sovereignty. He also mentioned that China advocates for a swift and fair investigation into the Pahalgam attack.
Wang further urged that India and Pakistan should show restraint, open dialogue channels, and avoid conflict for the sake of regional peace and stability.
Pakistan promises to handle tensions 'responsibly'
During the conversation, Pakistan¡¯s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar reiterated that his country remains committed to fighting terrorism. Dar also said that Pakistan opposes any action that could worsen the situation. He assured the Chinese leadership that Pakistan would deal with the current situation "responsibly" and would keep in touch with China and other international players to prevent escalation.
China¡¯s stand on the Pahalgam attack
Earlier, China had strongly condemned the terror attack that took place on April 22. At least 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed and over 20 were injured in one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent years. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, during a press briefing, said that China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism. He conveyed condolences to the families of those killed and expressed sympathies to the injured.

India's countermeasures after the attack
In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, India launched strong countermeasures against Pakistan.
New Delhi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and revoked all Pakistani visas except those granted for diplomatic purposes. India also halted the SAARC visa exemption, closed key border crossings, and downgraded diplomatic ties with Islamabad. Inside Jammu and Kashmir, Indian authorities intensified counter-terror operations. This included demolishing homes of suspected militants and launching massive manhunts. Meanwhile, tensions continued at the Line of Control (LoC) where there were four straight days of firing between the two sides. India termed Pakistan's actions as "unprovoked" ceasefire violations and responded with swift retaliatory firing.
