Operation Sindoor: PM Modi chairs meeting on national security; ¡®we only responded to Pahalgam attack¡¯ says Foreign Secretary
Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. PM Modi chaired a high-level review as drones and missiles were intercepted. India says de-escalation now depends on Pakistan.

India has stated that it did not escalate tensions but merely responded to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians. In a special briefing on Thursday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the choice to de-escalate now lies with Pakistan. ¡°Our approach is not to escalate the situation; we only responded to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack,¡± Misri said.
He further criticised Pakistan¡¯s stance at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where Pakistan opposed the naming of The Resistance Force (TRF) ¡ª the group that had already claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack. Misri also stated that Pakistan¡¯s retaliatory actions were affecting civilians through firings along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
PM Modi chairs high-level security review
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with Union Secretaries to assess national security and inter-ministerial coordination. The review meeting focused on India¡¯s readiness following the terror attack and the retaliatory strikes conducted under Operation Sindoor.

A statement from the Prime Minister¡¯s Office highlighted the need for continued alertness, civil defence strengthening, and tackling misinformation. Ministries were advised to ensure the security of critical infrastructure and coordinate closely with state governments and local agencies. Secretaries from key ministries presented their preparedness plans and reviewed their emergency response systems.
India foils drone and missile attacks
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that on the night of May 7-8, Pakistan attempted to target multiple Indian military locations using drones and missiles. These attacks were aimed at areas including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Bhuj, among others. India¡¯s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully neutralised all attempted intrusions.
The Defence Ministry added that Pakistan also tried to hit targets in Adampur, Bhatinda, and Chandigarh. However, all attempts were foiled.
Parliament committees praise armed forces
India¡¯s retaliatory operations, under Operation Sindoor, received wide support within Parliament. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) unanimously adopted a resolution congratulating the armed forces for their actions in targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
PAC Chairperson K C Venugopal said this resolution was passed in the panel¡¯s first meeting for 2025¨C26. Similarly, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas adopted a resolution praising the success of the operation. The resolutions highlighted the bravery and resolve of India¡¯s armed forces and the government's commitment to dismantling terrorist infrastructure in the region.
