A detail researched study conducted by Booking.com has given us insights into the travel habits of 21,500 travellers across 29 countries, and the biggest learning from the survey is how social media is increasingly influencing people's travel plans.
Celebrity influences
Of all the Indian respondents to the survey, 66% admit aspiring to use social media to launch a travel-based career, which shows how social media perception is increasingly becoming the defining factor for Indian travellers.

The research also reveals that 53% of Indian travellers look at where celebrities stay and try to find accommodation that looks similar. In fact, 24% of Indian travellers go so far as trying to recreate poses from one of their favourite celebs or Instagrammers -- wouldn't have guessed that now, would you?
Honest revelations
Social perception is everything for Indian travellers, from the looks of it. In the travel survey, 30% of Indian respondents admit of having used an older, more flattering image from a previous holiday rather than from their current trip on social media.

What's more, 42% have also said that they posted a picture of a different hotel or resort and pretending they were staying there, while 63% want to stay in attractive accommodation that they know will look good on social media.
And finally, the most revealing admission of all: as many as 22% of Indian travellers have pretended to still be on vacation when they are actually at home, while posting photos on social media.
And the survey predicts that going forward in 2019 social media travel trends will continue to influence people's travel decisions. A sign of changing times, perhaps?
