US Pentagon Has Created AI That Can Predict World Events Days In Advance

Machine learning could help the US military take proactive decisions to prepare and safeguard their nation in a way that's scarily similar to predicting future world events almost days in advance.

Reported first by The Drive, the US Northern Command recently completed a string of tests for Global Information Dominance Experiments (GIDE), a slew of AI, cloud computing and sensors that could allow the Pentagon to predict events ¡®days in advance¡¯ as claimed by Command leader General Glen VanHerck.

While this might not be as advanced as it sounds, it does hold the capability of altering a massive shift in military and government operations.

The ML-based system looks at changes made in raw, real-time data that could indicate possible trouble if any. The report gives examples of satellite imagery of a rival nation¡¯s submarine getting ready to leave its port, the AI could bookmark that movement to be prepared in case it was to arrive and attack in the US seas.

Military analysts could take hours to finely strain through this information, but the AI system would do this in a matter of seconds and alert the authorities accordingly.

They conducted the most comprehensive dry run to date -- GIDE 3 -- that involved 11 US commands and the broader Defense Department using a combination of military and civilian sensors to look at situations where ¡®contested logistics¡¯ could cause problems. According to the General, the tech isn¡¯t as state of the art as one would expect, however, the military has ¡®stitched everything together'.

VanHerck said in a statement, ¡°We're not creating new capabilities to go get data and information. This information exists from today's satellites, today's radar, today's undersea capabilities, today¡¯s cyber, today's intel capabilities. The data exists. What we're doing is making that data available¡­ and shared into a cloud, where machine learning and artificial intelligence look at it and they process it really quickly and provide it to decision-makers, which I call decision superiority.¡±

He added, ¡°This gives us days of advanced warning and ability to react. Where, in the past, we may not have put eyes on with an analyst of a GEOINT satellite image, now we are doing that within minutes or near real-time. That's the primary difference that I'm talking about.¡±

According to VanHerck, the platform could go live in the real world real soon. The tests were made on a ¡®ready to field¡¯ software which could be validated at the next Globally Integrated Exercise in the spring of 2022.
