Umpire or batter to blame? 'Fixing' accusations trends as Dewald Brevis LBW sparks outrage
Fans on social media, especially X, were outraged by the LBW decision to get Dewald Brevis out, largely because the DRS timer was never shown on the broadcast ！ something many fans believed was unacceptable.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost a winning game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium by just 2 runs. CSK, who have never successfully chased a target over 180 runs, came out all guns blazing in pursuit of the 214-run target set by RCB.
After a solid knock by Ayush Mhatre, his dismissal brought Dewald Brevis to the crease ！ and fans knew a lot would depend on the young South African batter. However, Brevis was given out despite replays clearly showing he wasn't. Interestingly, he wasn't allowed to review as well and this sparked a major debate online, with "fixing" trending and many blaming RCB.
What happened?
On the very first ball Dewald Brevis faced from Lungi Ngidi, the pacer bowled a high full toss targeting leg stump that struck Brevis on the pads. The on-field umpire, Nitin Menon, raised his finger for LBW.
However, replays later confirmed that the ball was clearly missing the leg stump ！ in fact it was missing even the 5th stump ！ making the decision highly questionable. Despite this, Brevis was not permitted to review the decision.
Why Dewald Brevis was denied a review
According to the rules, a batter has 15 seconds to signal for a review after the on-field decision is made. In Brevis's case, he first completed a run and then briefly had a talk with Ravindra Jadeja before signaling for a review.
However, by the time he did so, the 15-second window had already passed ！ leading the umpires to reject the review and uphold the original decision.
Fans trend 'fixing' on social media
Fans on social media were outraged by the decision, largely because the DRS timer was never shown on the broadcast ！ something many saw as unacceptable. Others argued that since an RCB fielder attempted a run-out while Brevis was completing his run, the ball was clearly still in play, and the review should have been permitted.
The word "fixing" began trending on X (formerly known as Twitter), with many users accusing RCB of bribing the umpires to secure the win. Some fans also remarked that the controversy wouldn't gain much traction simply because it involved RCB and not Mumbai Indians (MI) ！ a team often linked to "fixing" allegations by fans.
One fan wrote, "Star Sports is now showing the DRS timer in their post-match show. They are so shameless. This match was literally fixed by RCB."
