7 Years Later, SSR's Shuddh Desi Romance Is Still A Beautiful Story Redefining Love Triangles

The entire country is fighting for Justice. Justice for a Bollywood actor who went away too soon. Justice for an actor who we still don't know died by suicide or was murdered. Yes, Sushant Singh Rajput has been running on our news channels for more than 80 days now. He passed away on 14th June and there is a whole campaign running to bring him justice.

However, in the midst of this, lets not forget the beautiful movies, the actor featured in. Way before Dhoni marked his official arrival in Bollywood, Sushant Singh Rajput featured in a solo hero film in Shuddh Desi Romance. An honest love story that had an interesting love triangle attached.

During the release of the film, Sushant was called a star who is here to stay and rightly so as he featured in many commercial blockbusters after.

It has been 7 years since Shuddh Desi Romance released and it continues to still be a refreshing watch. Here's why

1 You love the the characters from the minute Go

Apart from Sushant who plays Raghu, the movie also features Taara (Vaani Kapoor) and Gayatri ( Parineeti Chopra). The movie is shot in Jaipur and is colourful and happy. Gayatri and Raghu meet during a wedding pretending to be guests and hit it off. Their chemistry is so organic and love so pure, it touches you instantly. There are no fancy houses or fancy cars. It shows Raghu playing the role of a tourist guide, who runs away from his own wedding and for falls for Gyaatri. The first frame of the film makes you want to choose sides.

2. The movie explores live in relationships and commitment phobias

The movie shows how both Raghu and Gayatri comes from traditional middle class backgrounds. However, they want to explore their life as a couple and try live in relationship and they do. Director Maneesh Sharma shows the life of a regular couple trying their hands on staying together in a beautiful city of Jaipur. It covers real time issues of how people want to enter relationships and stay with their partners but get cold feet whenever there is a topic of marriage.

3. The movie has it's share of romance, comedy and drama

Shuddh Desi Romance has everything that we need in a commercial Bollywood potboiler. Whether it's showing love, leg pulling, break up or even running from a wedding, not once but twice. The realism in their acting and in their background makes the movie a definite watch.

4. The movie redefines a classic love triangle - One lead hero with two female leads

It's a classic love triangle but a little twisted too. Instead of people wanting to marry each other, it's a mess about how they get nervous around their D-Day and leave the other one behind. The only one who gets her heart broken, not once but twice is - Taara. Even then, it all comes to a happy ending which is again a classic YRF angle.

The movie shows no one getting married but re-trying their hands at the relationship, this time seriously.

5. Modernity blends with tradition seamlessly

They're the coolest desi people you'll ever meet - and this means the whole trio. But to believe that these people exist in Jaipur is slightly too much to ask for. Sushant and Pari's character are so middle class, they dance at random people's wedding and get paid. However, when it comes to dating, they are modern enough to address the elephant in the room, i.e live in.

Unlike other people who still consider it a taboo, back then in 2013, in the film, they are shown staying together and enjoying the little middle class things of life. This includes washing and drying clothes, making breakfast, doing daily household chores. It has never been shown in a movie with such detail.

6. 27 kisses and an adorable happy ending

Rajput took the crown from Emraan Hashmi and became a serial kisser of 2013. In his second film as a solo male lead, the guy didn't hesitate to take the plunge and kiss his co-stars out of which one had her debut. Since the film tells the tale of young romance, attraction and commitment, kissing scenes were inevitable.

7. Vaani Kapoor's performance is good for a newcomer

Well, this is completely my opinion but I really feel this is by far Vaani's best performance. For a new comer, her role as Taara is coy in the beginning but when Raghu leaves her in the middle of a wedding, then she marks her comeback to seek revenge. Even in the traditional attire, Vaani manages to give diva goals. Her song, Gulabi was also the most hummed number.

8. Needless to say, after Kai Po Che, SSR is brilliant as Raghu despite two female leads

After a packing performance in Kai Po Che with three leads, Sushant dived straight into a trio film again. But this time the focus was on him with two leading ladies. Sushant nails it in his second performance as well. His character as a tourist guide is so believable that he actually makes you feel he belongs to Jaipur. Whether its his dialect, costumes, expressions, he is a star.

9. We have to mention the Ishaqzaade star

This piece is incomplete if we don't mention the outstanding presence Parineeti gets to the screen. Gayatri's face lights up like magic and her performance in the film is so effortless, that you love her despite her character flaws. She is the boldest out of three when it comes to making decisions to live in. She is the one who is experience in the relationship department since she has had relationships in the past. She is everything about today's woman. Gutsy, committed and looking for hopeless love.

10. The music of the film just adds spunk in the already romantic film

I remember downloading every single song from the film because it's relatable, hum-worthy and makes sense in the film. From Gulabi, Tere Mere Beech Mein, Chanchal Man Ati Random or Shudh Desi Romance title track, every song gives you an insight on today's relationships.

11. Jitters, confusion, labels of love, lust and marriage

Movie shows modern love story and the real time struggles. The story revolves around three restless people looking for love and not tying down with societal norms. The beauty of the movie is that they follow their heart right till the ending.
