1. Ugramm

The film marks the directorial debut of Prashanth Neel, who helmed both the KGF films. The film was lauded for its cinematography, surreal background score and terrific performances. The story follows mechanic Agastya (Sri Murali) who takes Nithya (Haripriya) to his home in order to save her from local goons. Soon, she discovers, Agastya has a dark past in Mughor, a region that is ruled by the underworld. Who are those goons and what's Agastya's connection with them forms the rest of the plot of the movie.

2. Vikram Vedha

The Tamil movie that stars Vijay Sethupathi and R Madhavan in lead roles is currently being made in Hindi with Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan playing the lead roles. Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan were supposed to star in the project, but they had opted out of it for reasons best known to them. The plot of the film is based on Indian folktale Baital Pachisi. The story revolves around Police officer Vikram (R Madhavan) who is tracking down a gangster Vedha (Vijay Sethupathi) who tells him three stories and asks him what he would have done in those cases. This completely changes Vikram's perspective on good and evil.

3. Vada Chennai

If you like gangster crime-drama films, this one is a must-watch for you. Starring Dhanush, the movie is set against the backdrop of North Chennai. The plot of the movie follows a young carrom player who participates in a war between two gangster groups. However, he decides to take them down when they plan to wipe out his locality.

4. Sarkar

This film starring superstar Vijay divulges the issue of corruption in voting. Written and directed by AR Murugadoss, the movie follows an NRI businessman who learns that his vote has been cast by someone else. As he goes on a mission to find the truth, he is pitted against two corrupt politicians who try to break him.

5. Mufti

If you love cat and mouse thrillers, Kannada film Mufti starring superstar Shiva Rajkumar, Sri Murali and Shanvi Srivastava will be a great watch for you. The movie which was lauded by one and all revolves around Gana (Sri Murali), an undercover cop, who tracks down and confronts underworld boss Bhairathi Ranagal (Shiva Rajkumar).

6. Pogaru

This Dhruva Sarja starring film follows Shiva, a local Ruffian who fights for the rights of common people. He has garnered the support and affection of the general public and is seen as a vehicle for social change. Although the film received criticism for its toxic masculinity, it still was a big success at the box office.

7. Mersal

Starring Vijay, Mersal revolves around brothers Vetri and Maaran who are separated as children after their parents are murdered. They eventually come together to fight against the medical mafia and thus seek revenge for their father's death.

8. Maari

Starring Dhanush in the lead role, this action-comedy movie follows Maari, a local angster who is also a pigeon trainer ¨C who extorts money from people in the area along with two other men from his own gang. He forcibly tries to become the business partner of his ladylove Sridevi who pretends to fall in love with him in order to make him confess a crime. The sequel of the film was released in 2018.

9. Gaddalakonda Ganesh

Full of twists and turns, the movie revolves around an aspiring filmmaker who wants to direct a realistic story. When he comes across a menacing villain, he decides to learn more about it. In order to do the same, he puts his and his friend's life in danger.
