The Cannes Film Festival 2025 has kicked off, and this year, the French festival is more than just about the red carpet. Well, on Wednesday, May 13, Robert De Niro made his rare appearance on the red carpet, and most interestingly, during his acceptance speech, he slammed US President Donald Trump over putting a 100 per cent tariff on foreign-made films. However, he is not the only one who pointed this out; the Cannes jury head, Juliette Binoche, also spoke about it.
Juliette Binoche, the head of the Cannes Film Festival 2025 jury, on Tuesday said that US President Donald Trump's threat to impose 100 per cent tariffs on foreign-made films was also about saving his reputation.

Donald Trump is trying to save his reputation
While speaking to journalists in the French Riviera resort town, the French actor said, "We can see that he's fighting, and he's trying in many, many different ways to save America and save his ass."
She went on to say that they have a very strong community of filming on their continent, in Europe. Moreover, the Oscar-winning actor will decide with eight other jury members, including actors Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong, on which film will take home the festival's Palme d'Or trophy.

What do other jury members say about Donald Trump's tariff plan?
Apart from Binoche, Strong, popular for playing Kendall Roy in the HBO series Succession, highlighted that under the presidency of Donald Trump, the role of film as a way to communicate truth had become quite important.

He said he viewed his role on the jury as a way to balance out his portrayal of young Donald Trump's mentor, Roy Cohn, in The Apprentice, which was also a part of the previous year's Cannes competition.
"Roy Cohn, I see, essentially as the progenitor of fake news and alternative facts. And we're living in the aftermath of what I think he created," said Strong.
