Despite PSG dominating possession and creating more chances, Botafogo stayed organised and struck at the right moment. In the 36th minute, Jefferson Savarino lofted a long ball into the PSG half, which Jesus controlled beautifully. The Brazilian forward skipped past two defenders and fired a low shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give his side the lead.
The goal was the first PSG had conceded since May 17 and ended their long unbeaten run. Jesus celebrated wildly with the travelling Botafogo fans, leaping into the front row of the Rose Bowl crowd.
PSG, without the injured Ousmane Dembele, pushed hard in the second half, but Botafogo¡¯s defence held strong. Luis Enrique¡¯s side finished with 16 shots, but only two were on target. Botafogo, in contrast, managed four shots, all of them on goal.
Brazilian side top the group as PSG fall short
Botafogo coach Renato Paiva praised his players, saying, ¡°We believed in ourselves. We played like a real team and stopped PSG from playing their usual game.¡±
Luis Enrique admitted Botafogo made things difficult. ¡°This is a tough tournament. Botafogo defended very well and made us struggle in attack,¡± he said after the match.
The win takes Botafogo to the top of the group with six points from two games. PSG will now face MLS side Seattle Sounders in their final group match, needing a win to keep their knockout hopes alive. Botafogo, meanwhile, will face Atletico Madrid with a real chance of progressing, a scenario few saw coming before the tournament began.
