From A Village With No Road Or Power, She Still Cracked UPSC In The First Attempt

Kumari Priyanka would go to her father¡¯s farm after her school to lend him a helping hand. Later when she moved to Gopeshwar, some 115 km from home in the remote village of Rampur, she taught 40 students for some extra money.

After facing all the challenges she did, the 28-year-old has now cracked the UPSC exam in the first attempt, and all she wishes is to pave the way for those who may follow.

After clearing the UPSC exam she could not let her family know for two days because she was in Dehradun and her family in Rampur, 145 km away. The village reportedly does not have a proper road, power supply nor mobile connectivity.

According to TOI, her father Diwan Ram went looking for a spot, on top of a small hill to get a phone signal and when he told him she secured 257th rank, he broke into tears.

¡°There were no good schools in Rampur. I studied at the primary school there, then moved to Junior High School in Toporti (about 1-2 km from Rampur). After classes got over, I would go help my father in the fields. It was the sole source of income for us,¡± she told TOI.

After she did well in her class X boards, teachers recommended to her parents that they move her to a better institution.

¡°So my parents sent me to Gopeshwar, where I studied at the Government Girls Inter College and then did my BA,¡± she reportedly said. She moved to Dehradun, where she pursued a law degree at DAV College.

Talking about her village she said, ¡°You have to trek 15 km (from Dewal, the nearest point with road connectivity) to reach Rampur.¡± 70-80 families live in the village, all have been cut off from basics. Talking about the experiences that shaped her, she told the story of a man who had once fell from a tree and was bleeding profusely she said, ¡°No ambulances can go there. Some of the villagers carried him on their shoulders, down 15 km, to a hospital. But he died before they could get him there.¡±

She further said, ¡°The hardships made me stronger. I have seen a lot in life. When things got tough, I¡¯d often feel like giving up. But I¡¯d pull myself up each time. Now I know that I can make use of the platform I have achieved to make things better for others like me.¡±

People like Kumari Priyanka are an inspiration for all. She accomplished what she has against all odds.
