U.S. Open Day 1 leaderboard recap: Spaun on top, McIlroy and DeChambeau trail
J.J. Spaun leads the U.S. Open 2025 after a bogey-free 66 in Round 1. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler struggled to a 73, while Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau also failed to shine. With the cut looming, the stars now face pressure to fight back in Round 2.
The third major of the season began with high expectations, especially for world No 1 Scottie Scheffler. But Day 1 at the 125th U.S. Open saw several surprises. Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau all failed to impress, while J.J. Spaun took charge with a flawless round.
Spaun delivered a bogey-free 66 and grabbed the solo lead at four under. He was calm and clinical throughout, avoiding the mistakes that plagued many of the tournament favourites¡¯ efforts. Thriston Lawrence was one shot behind after a 67, followed by a tie for third between Brooks Koepka, Si Woo Kim and Sungjae Im.
Scheffler, who arrived as the hottest name in golf and heavy favourite, could only manage a 3-over 73. McIlroy finished with a 74 and DeChambeau matched Scheffler with a disappointing 73. All three will need to improve massively in Round 2.
