Bollywood Is In Love With Biopics & These 13 Upcoming Films Based On Real People Are Proof
It¡¯s raining biopics in Bollywood. We have seen plenty of them ¨C Sanju, Neerja, Dangal, MS Dhoni and Mary Kom among others ¨C in the past couple of years, but the trend isn¡¯t going away anytime soon. The fact that these movies are doing great at the box office is perhaps motivating filmmakers to make more. Also, between fiction and non-fiction, it is easier to choose the middle way -- Biopics -- isn't it?
Anything monumental happens in the nation and trolls start to bet as to who will sign the biopic. When PV Sindhu became the first Asian to win the BWF World Championships, a lot of people feared and if Akshay Kumar, who has been doing only nationalistic movies in the recent past, would emerge in the role of the ace badminton player in the movie.
There¡¯s also a relief that Bollywood has stopped making shitty romantic movies, but is the industry running out of creative content and original scripts that it is resorting to only making movies based on the real-life incidents and people?
When the Balakot airstrikes took place and the Article 370 of the Indian constitution was abrogated, filmmakers rushed to register the titles. Nothing will seemingly change, at least in the near future because these 17 biographical films are already in the works.

Based on the historical and incredible cricket world cup win in 1983, the movie stars Ranveer Singh in the role of Kapil Dev. Deepika, his real-life wife will play the role of his wife in the movie as well. Being directed by Kabir Khan, the movie is slated to release on April 10, 2020.
#2 Balakot
After acting in PM Modi¡¯s biopic, Vivek Oberoi is all set to produce Balakot, a movie that will be based on the airstrikes that led to the capture as well as subsequent release of IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. Who will play his role? It is yet to be known. The film will be shot in Hindi, Tamil as well as Telugu.
#3 Chhapaak
Based on the life of acid attack survivor Lakshmi Agarwal, who was attacked at the age 15 when she was going to a book store, Chhapaak will show how she is leading her life with courage despite the hurdles. While Deepika will play the role of Lakshmi Agarwal, Mirzapur and Masaan fame Vikrant Massey will be seen portraying the role of her husband in the movie.
#4 Gunjan Saxena- The Kargil Girl
One of the unsung heroes of the nation, Gunjan Saxena was India¡¯s first woman pilot of Kargil, who helped evacuate soldiers during the Kargil War in 1999. Janhvi Kapoor will be seen playing her role in the movie, which is jointly produced by Dharma Productions and Fox Star Studious. Also starring, Pankaj Tripathi as her father, Neena Gupta as her mother and Angad Bedi as her brother, the movie is slated to release on March 13, 2020.
#5 Shershaah
Based on the story of Captain Vikram Batra, an officer in Indian Army who was posthumously bestowed with the Param Vir Chakra, India¡¯s highest award for valour for his actions in the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, Shershaah will star Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in the lead roles. Directed by Vishnuvardhan and written by Sandeep Srivastava, the film is produced under the banner of Dharma Productions.
#6 Biopic on Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw
In his next, Vicky Kaushal will be seen playing the role of Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw, fondly called Sam Bahadur, the the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. The shooting of the movie will begin in 2021.
#7 Ma Anand Sheela biopic
The role of former right-hand woman to Osho, Ma Anand Sheela, whose popularity grew after Netflix¡¯s documentary series titled Wild Wild Country had released, will be portrayed by our Desi Girl Priyanka Chopra. American director Barry Levinson will helm the project. Currently, the project is in its pre-production stage.
#8 Satnam Singh Bhamara biopic

Zee5 has announced a biopic to be made on the life of Indian basketball player Satnam Singh Bhamara. At the age 19, he had become the first Indian to be drafted in NBA. The cast as well as the crew hasn¡¯t been announced as of yet. Speculations are rife that Abhishek Bachchan might be cast in the role.
#9 PV Sindhu Biopic
The 24-year-old has become the first Indian Badminton player ever to win a gold medal at the World Championship. It is said that in her biopic, Deepika Padukone is likely to play the role. PV Sindhu also thinks that Deepika might be the right choice for this role as she has played badminton in the past and is a great actor too. The project will be produced by Sonu Sood.

A biopic based on the life story of ace Badminton player Saina Nehwal is also in the works. While earlier Shraddha Kapoor was roped in to play the role, now Parineeti Chopra has reportedly replace her.

The coach that has produced many shuttlers including PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal himself was a former badminton player who had won the All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001. He has been honoured with awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, and the Padma Bhushan among others. It is said that Akshay Kumar might play his role. However, nothing can be said to be confirmed as of now.

The captain of Indian women¡¯s cricket team, Mithali Raj is the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket. She is also the only female cricketer who has been able to surpass the 6,000 run mark in WODIs. Regarded as one of the greatest batswomen ever, Mithali Raj is also the first player to score seven consecutive 50s in the ODIs. Taapsee Pannu has been roped in to play her role.
#13 PT Usha Biopic
A biopic on PT Usha, also called the queen of Indian track and field, the sprinter who has won as many as 101 international medals, the woman who had the courage to break stereotypes and follow her dreams, is being made. Rumours are rife that Katrina Kaif might be roped in to play her role in the movie that will be helmed by Revathy S. Varmha. The movie will be made in English and will be dubbed be Hindi, Malayalam, Chinese as well as Russian.
