Here's All You Need To Know About India's Doping Mess Just Ahead Of Rio Olympics

India's Olympic campaign has been hit by the doping scandal just ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics. It is definitely not something that India needed at this stage. Out of the 120 athletes bound for Rio de Janeiro for this year's biggest sporting extravaganza, two have been marred by doping violations. We figure out for you what happened and what can be done about it?

Narsingh Yadav's Case Isn't Shocking As India Have Been A Top Doping Violator In The Last Five Years

The Athletes Involved

India's 74-kg freestyle wrestler Narsingh Pancham Yadav, shot-putter Inderjeet Singh and a 66 kg wrestler Sandeep Tulsi Yadav have failed dope tests in the last three days. Where Narsingh and Inderjeet were medal hopefuls for India at Rio Olympics in their events, Sandeep was Narsingh's sparing partner at Sonepat and isn't part of the Olympic contingent.

Narsingh had earned a quota for India last year with a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championship in the 74-kg category and won the right to represent India at the Games.

Inderjeet was one of the first Indian athletes to have clinched a spot in Rio Games last year. He won the gold medal in Asian champions, Asian Grand Prix and the World University Games last year and won the Bronze medal at the Incheon Asian Games. He finished second place in the Indian Grand Prix earlier this year in spite of a shoulder injury and is in top form for the upcoming Games.

What Substances Were They Banned For?

When Narsingh failed an out of competition test on July 5, the substance found in his sample was Methandienone, an anabolic steroid taken primarily for gaining weight. On the other hand, Inderjeet's A sample has been found positive for a banned substance and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has notified the athlete and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) about the failed dope test.

Both Are Crying Foul Now

Narsingh: "I believe that there is foul play involved in this entire episode. Someone has sabotaged my food supplements and water intake. This is a conspiracy against me. I am sure the truth will come out."

Inderjeet: "I am being targeted and it¡¯s a clear case of conspiracy against me. My sample has been tampered with. Why would I take something which is not good for health? I have been speaking out against the politics in sports in India and how badly athletes are treated and their poor training facilities, and this has riled many powerful people in the country. I have never shied away from dope tests."

What The Federation Is Saying

Narsingh has garnered a stronger backing from his federation who had pushed for his inclusion in the Olympics team instead of Sushil Kumar, who is a two-time Olympic medalist. Narsingh has also shot a letter to the Prime Minister's office for him to intervene in the matter. "Narsingh's record is clean. He is someone who never shied away from dope tests. The federation believes Narsingh is innocent. Injustice has happened with him and we are hopeful he will get justice.I will try my level best to help Narsingh get out of this problem so that he can represent India in 74kg in the Olympics and win a medal," said Brij Bhusan Sharan Singh, Wrestling Federation Of India president.

Inderjeet, meanwhile, is hoping that his 'B' Sample tests negative and he's given a green signal to participate in the Games. Reportedly, sources in the National Anti-Doping Agency have said: "We were doubting something was wrong when we came to know about him avoiding the NADA tests. Our worst fears have come true."

So Do They Still Have A Chance?

Narsingh's chances are all but gone as the WFI has already named a replacement for him in Praveen Rana to represent India in the 74-kg wrestling category. Inderjeet is running time and hoping for a better result in his B Sample.

No matter what happens, the doping mess has tarnished India's confident run up to the Olympics.
