Man Who Burnt Alive Mohammed Afrazul In Rajasthan Now Claims It Was A Case Of Mistaken Identity

Ever since his shocking actions of murdering a 50-year-old man came to light, many including the victim's family have been left baffled for one reason - why did he kill Mohammed Afrazul, whom he did not know previously.

The murderer, Shambhu Lal Regar had claimed that the victim was involved in "love jihad" and his action was a war against love jihadists.

But Afrazul's family and colleagues from Bengal had rejected the allegations and said the daily wage worker was never involved in any affair or conversion.

One of the first possibilities the police looked into was Regar who was obsessed with watching hate videos on his mobile wanted to make an example by randomly targeting any Muslim man in the locality and Afrazul was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now the cops said, Regar has admitted that, in fact he did not know his victim and his target was someone else. Regar's intended target was one Ajju Sheikh, another migrant worker from Bengal, whom he suspected of having an affair with a local Hindu girl, Hindustan Times has reported.

While Regar claims the girl was like his sister, others say he had an affair with girl and was afraid that he might lose her to Ajju. In his pursuit for Ajju, Regar went to the local market looking for him, but could not meet his victim. He then asked for Ajju's number saying that he had to get some work done by him.

¡°Either the labourer misheard Regar, or he thought that since Shambhu needs to get some work done, why not help Afrazul, probably his acquaintance, get some work. He then gave Afrazul¡¯s number to Shambhu,¡± a police officer told Hindustan Times.

Regar then called Afrazul on phone and told him that he had to construct a boundary wall. On the day of the crime, Regar picked up Afrazul and even had tea with him at a local teashop.

He then went back home and returned with the pickaxe which he used to kill Afrazul, and brought along his younger daugher and 14-year-old nephew who recorded the crime on his phone.

Meanwhile, relative calm has returned to Udaipur and neighbouring areas, days after the city witnessed violent clashes between police and Hindu right wing groups supporting Regar.

More than 150 people who defied a Section 144 and marched in support of the murderer was arrested by police last week following the violence.

¡°As long as a strong law is not passed against ¡®love jihad¡¯, chances are that more Regars will come forward. Regar is the symbol of what the Hindu community feels right now,¡± said Ganesh Vaishnav, a member of the Shiv Sena.
